Here it is! The review of Dornenreich´s seventh record “Flammentriebe”. First of all, before I am going to write something about the music, I want to thank this band for their art. Back in 2001, they released an epic record called “Her von welken Nächten”, which changed my way of feeling music completely. I bought this record for around 30 pounds in London when I was fifteen, and from that time on I followed every step of this band.  I can say that there are only a few artists who influenced me in such a strong way. Thanks for that!

Honestly, I have to say that beside real great music moments, Dornenreich also have disappointed me. I never was a big fan of the “Hexenwind” record and was really frustrated by the “Nachtereisen” DVD, so that my real passion for the band began to dissolve.

The first time I heard “Flammenmensch”, which is also the first song of the new record “Flammentriebe”, I was really close to giving them up completely. The guitar riff didn´t fit in my personal picture of the band because I was probably expecting a “Her von welken Nächten Part. 2″ or even a rip off.

But thank God that “Flammenmentriebe” is more than that! Dornenreich surprised me in a very positive way. They created something new, again! After having listened to the record for the ninth time now I still cannot describe what I hear. “Flammenmtriebe” is full of emotions created by guitar, voice and violin, and the atmosphere is wonderfully underlined by Gilvan´s drumming (thumbs up for that!).

I would describe “Flammentriebe” as a mixture of all positive aspects of the other releases.  After the beginning of nearly every song you would probably say that this is the next “In Luft geritzt” record but after a few moments you immediately recognize “Her von welken Nächten” influences (the guitar riff of the last song “Wolfpuls” makes me thinking of the song “Schwarz schaut tiefsten Lichterglanz”). There are also folkish aspects on this record (like in “Durch den Traum” and “in Luft geritzt”), but they aren´t in the foreground anymore. On the other hand, you clearly hear that Dornenreich are rooted in the style of Black Metal and Eviga shows his beautiful, so much missed black metal voice again. But “Flammentriebe” is not only a mixture of all their records, no, they have improved and it seems that they even have been influenced by some shoegaze/postrock black metal (I don´t like this tag). In the songs “Wolfpuls” and “Erst deine Träne löscht den Brand” (my two favourite ones) you can find some shoegazish aspects.  And there is even a guitar tapping part in the latter one.

Ten years after my first experience with this band I can claim that they have surprised me with this record in a very positive way! On the one hand, the record seems to be influenced by proven aspects on the other hand, they didn´t fear to try out new things. The most important thing is that the mixture of these two ideas is done in a perfect and balanced way.

Just imagine Austere´s rerecording “To Lay Like Old Ashes” without the awfull Coma II song and that they are switching the (really great) black metal vocals for the (good) clean ones and vice-versa.

Don´t get me wrong, Grey Water´s  “Below The Ever Setting Sun” is not a bad EP but the vocals are just too cheesy and destroy the atmosphere….

They have  introduced Stanley Milgram´s electro-shock experiment into TV!

Through mesaruing the willingness of people to obey with their own, personal conscience, Milgram wanted to show which effects an authority figure has on one´s obedience. His goal was it to understand the behavior of  people during holocaust in World War II.

In Milgram´s first set of experiment 65% of all participants gave the final massive 450-volt shock to the  “victim”.  And now the France 2 television presenter is really astonished that during the show  81% of the people obeyed and gave shocks. Did this guy really think that society and humanity have changed in a positive way after World War I, World War II, and of course after all  other wars, killings etc.

No, humanity is still the most arrogant, with a strong leaning towards collective suicide/self-destruction and stupid species living on this planet, and Milgram proved it back  over 30 years ago. To be 100% sure of his results he even did variations of his experiment. So what does this TV show wants to show us, what´s the goal?

I just wait for MTV doing a Philip Zimbardo-Stanford Prison- Big Brother- Experiment because if we have reached this level real life Battle Royal is not that far away anymore!

To cut a long story short, “Fisu” tastes like/is a  mixture of vodka and Fishermen´s Friend and that´s why  a lot of locals as well as students mix their own.

Here is a real good recipe:

- Buy one bottle of Vodka (75 cl and min. 37%) and 3 packs of white Fishermen´s Friend.

- Pestle all the pastilles and fill them into the bottle of Vodka.

- Deposit the bottle in the freezer. After a few hours (+/- 3) you can serve the ice cold drink in shots.

As a lot of you know, I have a very wide-ranging taste in music which includes Portishead just as Aphex Twin, SunnO))) just as Chopin.

However most of the time I listen to a music genre, which is known as Depressive Suicidal Black Metal. Personally, I am absolutely no fan of all these different music categories and I especially don´t like this name of Depressive Suicidal Black Metal. It sounds completely ridicoulous and doesn´t reveal anything. I would, if  inevitable, describe it as atmospheric and emotional music with post rock and black metal influences.

But I see that I just fly off on a tangent, so back to topic. As I listen to a lot of underground music, it is very hard to find any good record store. You probabely are going to say now: “Buy the record online or just on iTunes”. But this is the next problem. I love it to go to  record stores to look for records for hours.

As I have already mentionned, it is really hard to find any good record stores but the Swamp Music Record Store in Tampere is just great! This store is not just limited on Nightwish, HIM and Lady Gaga.  You also can find  diversified stuff from Black Metal to Reaggie. They also have a nice assortment of Vinyl. I even found a record  I would never have expected to find in any store, so thank you very much for this quite nice surprise.

I am now living in Tampere for over 2 months and I haven´t been to sauna just until last week (shame on me)! So my friends from Luxembourg and me decided to go to a real sauna with real finnish guys  and ice swimming afterwards.

What should I say?! It was the most extreme experience I have made until now. The average temperature was around 115 degrees but as the finns are real masochists, they pushed the sauna, from time to time, up to 125 degrees, which was really crazy. It felt like you would burn while being alive.

After sitting in the sauna for around 15 minutes to half an hour, we just went outside in the snow and walked to the little lake. I made one big mistake in the begining, I was waiting to long, standing in the water, instead of just jumping into it. Hoffmann and Carneiro, they did it and I was just waiting for them in the snow. After the ice swimming you should just wait a little bit outside in the snow, so that your body can recover and you don´t just switch from one extreme to the other.

After 5 minutes we went back to the sauna again and the second time I was also jumping in the lake and it was the most painful thing I have ever felt. It feels like millions of little lightennings run through your body or like someone would stab you with a knife again and again. We just stayed a few seconds in the water and we repeated the whole ritual again 2 times.

I think  saunaing and ice swimming is an experience you will never forget and I am really looking forward to going to this happening again.

After 11 years Varg Vikernes´ new record was released yesterday.
I have to admit that I was tired of all the rumors going on about a new cd and I even was more tired of all the little children in  Burzum´s Last.fm Shoutbox.
As I am not really interested in the whole Metal attitude and Music anymore and as Last.fm is one of my only music information source I ignored all the sayings about Varg and Burzum during the last couple of years.
It was until a few month ago that I heard about “Belus” and I have to admit that I had absolutely no feelings towards this record. I really like “Filosofem” and “Det som engang var” and I, from time to time, also listened to the other records. But this was it, I have never thought about a new record not to mention that if I have done so, I probabely wouldn´t have cared about it.
But now “Belus” is there and what should I say? It´s great, really great! Burzum has definately grown! Varg has got older and wiser when it comes to the music but still he managed it somehow to keep the flair of the Filosofem Burzum. When Mayhem failed with their “Ordo ad Chao” in trying to sound like ´94, Varg has done everything right. The sound is just a perfect mixture of modern Black Metal and the old primitive sound.
Furthermore it´s quite difficult for me to describe the music in words or even to categorize it (what I really like) and this shows me that this record has potential.
Fast Black Metal guitar riffs and Varg´s typical and unique voice are melting with voice samples (Kaimadalthas´ Nedstigning), guitar melodies and mesmerizing monotonie.
Varg has managed to capture an incredible atmosphere which I only can feel in a handful of other records. You totally  got me Varg and I am speechless! Great work!

Buy the record and help the children in Haiti!
